About the job

Patmos Hosting Inc

Position Opening: Chief Technology Officer

Salary: $180,000 to $225,000 starting base with attainable bonus package capped at $400,000 per annum. Full benefits. Unlimited PTO.

Denver or Kansas City preferred. Remote possible.

Patmos is the most trusted hosting provider for the rapidly growing parallel economy. We provide businesses of all sizes with bespoke cloud infrastructure that surpasses the value of big-box hosting and is delivered with a personal touch. We also develop custom web, app, and software solutions to our treasured clients.

We relentlessly protect our clients from ever-increasing threats of big tech censorship by owning our own infrastructure down the dirt. This verticalization enables us to prevent cancellation and serve as an internet service provider. With our flagship Kansas City Data center, Dev HQ in Denver, and peering nodes across the globe, Patmos’s share of a rapidly growing alt-cloud market is increasing by the day. For clients looking to move off the cloud, Patmos also owns Joe’s Data Center, a Kansas City staple providing colocation and bare metal.

We are looking for a CTO who is excited about our mission, reflects our core values of freedom, simplicity, and humility, and is ready to help scale our business as its leading integrator.

Our ideal candidate:

As CTO of Patmos, you will be the conduit between the CEO and the cloud development teams, taking the company’s vision and creating executable processes that result in fruitful outcomes. You are a product-minded chief integrator of the company— as such, you can speak fluent “visionary” and translate it into “technician”. You can synthesize the company’s goals into measurable outcomes to lead your teams with purpose and clarity. You ensure that technology and systems are aligned with the company’s vision. Our CTO will have a combination of strong operational skills, a strategic mindset, and proven experience in scaling organizations to great heights. You have a strong financial acumen, solid business record, excellent decision-making, and excellent relationship building skills. You are able to effectively contribute to a sales call, a dev scrum, a budget meeting, and everywhere in between. Integrity matters, and Patmos has a rule against working with jerks. You are a servant-leader at heart who is willing to own blame and share glory. Most importantly, you find joy in leading and supporting teams to bring the company to success.

NB: Patmos does not (yet) employ a COO. We realize that many of these CTO duties would overlap with this traditional operations role, but decided that this position requires a technical expertise that supasses what a typical COO would bring.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with the CEO in driving global organizational vision and operational strategy in its tactical application.
  2. Manage the day-to-day technical production of the organization, including overseeing the work of department heads and ensuring that processes are efficient and effective.
  3. Drive cloud product development. Align production capacity with internal product innovation. You play a critical role in developing the company’s technology strategy by verifying that technology investments align with business goals and technology systems are scalable and secure.
  4. Collaborate with the Director of Infrastructure to support the company’s IT infrastructure. Maintain hardware, software, and data systems, and ensure systems are secure, scalable, and highly available.
  5. Manage the company’s data systems, including the implementation of data management processes and the development of data governance policies.
  6. Identify and mitigate technology risks such as data breaches, system failures, and security threats. Develop risk management plans and implement security measures to protect the company’s technology systems.
  7. Manage the company’s technical talent by recruiting, training, and mentoring technical staff. Ensure the company has the technical talent it needs to support its business goals.
  8. Work with the CFO to develop and maintain an operating budget to confirm that technology investments are aligned with business goals and that the company’s technology systems are cost-effective.
  9. Oversee the implementation of technology projects, including the selection of technology vendors, the development of project plans, and the management of project timelines and budgets.
  10. Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth by implementing company-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning.
  11. Work with the CEO to integrate the goals and operations of all departments, including product, engineering, finance, HR, and sales.
  12. Build an enthusiastic culture that allows team members (remote and onsite) to thrive when organizational goals are met.
  13. Develop and maintain trusting relationships with key customers, clients, partners, and stakeholders.
  14. Monitor current projects by preparing reports, receiving progress updates, and identifying areas that require corrective actions.
  15. Support the sales team and account owners by supplying technical insight to clients.
  16. Produce regular reporting materials for the company’s Board of Directors.

Who you are:

  • You are an integrator in search of a visionary.
  • You are a multi-disciplinary, executive-level leader with an aligned vision and a mind for innovation.
  • You bring at least seven years of experience in cloud infrastructure and product development – successfully leading tech teams.
  • (applicants lacking any of the above will not be considered.)

Also important:

  • You are detail oriented, a quick problem solver, and thrive in fast paced, changing environments. You can parse a high level vision into granular action, while directing granular action back toward that high level vision.
  • You bring a track record of supporting team members’ learning, development, and career growth, and building a culture aligned to organizational core values.
  • You understand the importance of building a culture that puts people first.
  • You thrive in developing efficient processes and procedures, but do not let them get in the way of completing tasks innovatively when needed.
  • You deliver results and can quickly pivot when the organization’s needs change.
  • You are proficient in scrum, agile methodologies, and are okay with the rare ‘cowboy’ sprint. Patmos runs a Traction / EOS leadership methodology. Familiarization there is a plus.
  • You have enough coding and network engineering knowledge to be dangerous and can step up as a day-to-day workhorse in those fields when needed.
  • You can be led, but have the confidence to disagree with leaders who love to hear when they are wrong (and you can be one yourself).
  • On day one, you possess the readiness to contribute to the goal of “making cloud simple” for our team and customers.
  • You are highly relational and collaborative, and can bring people together around a shared vision and strategy.
  • You believe that a small business can do great things and are excited to have the opportunity to serve in a young company that is a part of the counter-revolution against big-tech tyranny.

We are looking to bring our CTO on board as soon as possible, but we will spend the necessary time to find the best fit in abilities and culture. If you are ready to join a tight-knit, collaborative team that is passionate about the mission of Patmos we encourage you to apply.
